Finally the holidays are here. So we planned a travel to a Greek island called Crete May 27-June 10 for 15 days. The weather was pleasant not too hot and not too cold. We booked the tickets and flew to Crete. We had prepared a route around the western part of Crete. We wanted the trip to be relaxing but not just around the popular touristic areas but also around less explored places hiking in nature and mountains, experiencing local culture and cuisine. We arrived in the evening at Chania international airport late in the evening. We were picked up by a lady from the hostel. Our trip started from the a hostel near the airport welcomed by some cool friendly people there.
Here is a short itinerary summary of our 15 days in Crete
- Day 1: Arrival in Chania International Airport from Stockholm, late in the evening so not much than spent the evening at a nearby hostel
- Day 2: Visited the pre booked rental car company in the morning, and drove to Rythimno, explored the city,ate lunch, evening drove to a mountain resort in Anogia
- Day 3: Hiked to Zeus Cave and Nida Plateau, evening back at the hotel in Anogia
- Day 4: Road trip made a stopover at Patsos Gorge, hiked down the stream halfway took a dip in the fresh water cave. Back and wine tasting nearby. In the afternoon left for dinner at a tavern near to Preveli beach visit. Then drove to Kokkina Chorafia, spend the night there at an apartment
- Day 5: Road trip to Imbros Gorge, evening at a hotel in Anopoli, spend the first night there preparing for the hike next morning
- Day 6: The longest, adventerous and exhausting hike of the trip, Anopoli Aradena Gorge, Marmara, Lautro Anopolis. Second night at Anopolis
- Day 7: Road trip all the way west crossed Chania to Tavronitis to visit Balos and Gramovosa island the next day
- Day 8: Ferry trip to Balos and Gramvosa, evening back at Tavronitis
- Day 9: Road trip exploring the western beaches the whole day, evening at a hotel close to Elafonissi
- Day 10: Early moning to Elafonissi, spend the day, then evening check in at Sougia.
- Day 11: Left the car at Sougia, too early morning bus from Sougia to Omalos, Samaria gorge hike. Evening ferry trip back to Sougia. Second day spent in Sougia
- Day 12: Road trip to Chaina. Evening checked in a hotel near the lighthouse and harbour in Chania
- Day 13: Explored the city of Chania, walking around the old city and the attractions. Evening spend in the hotel
- Day 14: Contined exploring the city of Chania walking around, evenig the same hotel
- Day 15: Checked out from Chania, then we drove to a adventerous hidden blue water bay Katholiko Bay spend the day hiking, snorkeling. Evenig in a hotel near Chorafakia so that we are close to the airport
- Day 16: The most unplanned day, not sure what to do so we drove to Aptera. There was a historical monument there to see. The we drove back to wash the car in the afternoon, returned the car and waited for our flight to Stockholm in the evening.
